10 Ways to Remain Steady in an Unsteady World

About five years ago, we were finding our way through the uncertainty, fear, stress, and grief of the Covid-19 Pandemic and The Black Lives Matter Movement with protests, riots, and social unrest. Fast forward five years from Spring 2020 to today, I am hearing from many clients and connections that they are once again feeling heightened levels of uncertainty, fear, stress, and grief due to the political and social climate in the United States.

During unwelcome and trying times, how do you remain steady in the face of adversity and hardship? Beyond caring for your basic needs of sleep, nutrition, and hydration, here are 10 Ways to Remain Steady in an Unsteady World:

1. BE INTENTIONAL: Have daily goals. Write to do lists. Choose positive influences. Look for silver linings. Be of service, be patient, be kind, be curious about views different from your own.

2. LIMIT MEDIA: Check-in with reputable news sources 1x a day. Be informed, not obsessed.

3. KEEP A MACRO WORLDVIEW: Trust evolution and the cycles/rhythms of life. Remember the Earth has existed for billions of years and homosapiens 300,000+ years. This moment is a blimp in time.

4. TAKE MICRO ACTION: Act on the local level, make bite-sized goals. Where can you volunteer or what can you do to have an impact in your community? What is your circle of influence?

5. MOVE YOUR BODY: Every day. More than 1x a day! Dance, walk, run, sports, yoga, or any exercise.

6. ACCESS NATURE: Get outside. Touch the natural environment. Bring natural elements into your home. Listen to nature sounds. Watch nature documentaries. Take a salt bath. Let the natural world awe you and offer you perspective.

7. CONNECT: Gather with community. Pray. Practice meditation and mindfulness. Deep breathe. Hug. Laugh. Play with pets.

8. PLEASURE PRACTICE: Do things you enjoy. Follow your interests. Create and craft. Learn. Music. Food. Explore. Try new things. Stay in for a comfy night. Cuddle. Take a nap.

9. ANCHOR TO WHAT YOU KNOW IS TRUE: What are four things that you believe in, can count on, or access for support? Write them out. Review them daily. Sense the protection and power they offer you.

10. TAKE A PAUSE: Recognize when you need to rest. Regroup. Bow out, then come back in. Honor limits and boundaries.

With the right support and strategies, we can move through what life asks of us. We were made to navigate suffering, to ride the waves of time, to love and to grieve.
