“Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home”
Based on the work of Alfred Adler, belonging, security, and significance are our three universal human needs beyond our basic survival needs. All our movement in life is directed at getting our basic and universal needs met. We strive for a sense of belonging either through adaptive, socially interested ways, or maladaptive, destructive ways.
What does it mean to belong? How do we feel when we find a sense of belonging? We all know the pain of not belonging. Belonging is such a core human need. Yet, many of us struggle to experience belonging.
I just read the book, Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home by Toka-pa Turner where she questions “..what if belonging isn’t a place at all, but a skill?” Toka-pa delves into the origins of estrangement, forgetting our true nature, false belonging, true belonging, rewilding our spirits, shadow work, feeling at home in our bodies, slowing down to get back in flow with nature, finding community, and belonging as a dynamic process. Her perspective and this piece of work is rich with insights on belonging.
