It is to be brought into this world and parented by a present, attuned caregiver. This helps your nervous system develop a sense of safety, knowing your needs matter and will be met, and that people are to be trusted. It fosters a strong foundation from which to navigate the world, it builds internal resources that can be drawn from when times are tough or emotions are big.
Attachment theory is a growing field of psychology with implications for child development, parenting, careers, and intimate relationships. Our early relationship with our primary caregivers informs how we connect as adults with others.
Different attachment theories identify different types of attachment but three of the major ones are: Secure, Avoidant, and Anxious. The following Attachment Quiz and chart demonstrates some characteristics of these attachment styles. Please know we may all have attributes of each and may show up differently in different relationships or that over time our attachment preferences can change! Which is especially promising for those of us who were not blessed with attuned caregivers.
