What’s the Difference Between Counseling and Psychotherapy?

Most clients and people in the field, use the terms counseling and psychotherapy interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two practices.

Counseling is a solution-focused, problem solving, and skills-based top-down approach. Meaning it uses the higher functioning areas of the brain to lead to practical solutions to problems and nervous system regulation. Counseling can be a supportive approach to learn tools to self-regulate, manage stress and anxiety, or for psychoeducation on grief, trauma, or parenting etc. Counseling can be beneficial if you’re looking for quick relief from symptoms or support in navigating life transitions or relationship issues.

Psychotherapy on the other hand is a depth, soul-based bottom-up type of approach that looks to identify the underlying root cause of the problem and create lasting change in personality or relational functioning, and permanent healing. Psychotherapy can be useful in healing trauma or shifting maladaptive core beliefs and worldviews that have persisted since childhood.

I’m trained as a specialist in Adlerian Psychotherapy and Counseling. I often blend and use both approaches with clients. If you are looking to do some counseling or psychotherapy please reach out to Coriander Living Collective.
