7 Ways to Resource and Regulate During Chaotic Times

Sometimes life can feel relentless. We look around and hurt and tragedy keep coming at us. Whether it’s personal or collective upheaval, life can be overwhelming, exhausting, and demoralizing at times. YET, we always have the ability to access and resource within our bodies. Here are 7 Ways to Resource and Regulate During Chaotic Times:

1.    MOVE YOUR BODY: Dance, walk, run, do physical labor, or play active sports. Discharge excess energy with explosive movement.

2.    BREATHE: Practice deep breathing, belly breathing, or triangle breathing to SLOW down your nervous system.

3.    ACCESS NATURE TO GROUND: Get outside. Touch the natural environment, literally. Walk in the woods. Swim in a lake.

4.    CONNECT: With trusted neighbors, friends, family, and colleagues. Pray. Practice meditation and mindfulness. Hug. Gather in community.

5.    ANCHOR: What do you know to be true? That you love your family, you’re safe in your home, you have faith in something outside yourself, you feel capable of doing hard things, etc. Pick 3-4 things to anchor to during tough times.

6.    SOOTHE: By taking a warm bath, rocking or swaying, eating a favorite food, or singing, humming, or chanting.

7.    MEET BASIC NEEDS: Sleep longer. Drink more water. Eat foods rich in nutrients and low in sugar.
